ON THE COVER: Tom Smith's 22-percent Hawker Sea Fury making a show pass at Monster Planes USA for David Hart's camera. This sleek 101-inch WWII fighter was built from Jerry Bates plans and weighs 48 pounds with a Moki 215 5-cylinder radial up for both its power and distinctive exhaust note. While it would dominate the average club fly-in, Smith's Sea Fury was far from the largest model at the event. It was, however, one of the nicest, and he flew it every bit as well as it deserved on his way to winning the "Just Plane Awesome" award. See page 20 for David Hart's full report on this annual gathering of giants in Florida. Photo by Walter Sidas. |
